The Global Climate Forum (GCF)) is a non-profit research institute based in Berlin that brings together representatives of different parties concerned with climate change and sustainable development including energy industries, insurance and finance enterprises, policy-makers, environmental NGOs, and scientists in order to carry out joint studies that provide arguments for climate mitigation and adaptation policies leading ultimately towards a sustainable development path.
GCF collaborates in a new major international research effort, the Center of Excellence for Global Systems Science (CoeGSS), funded by the European Commission. Global Systems Science (GSS) is an emerging research field focused on the risks and opportunities involved in global coordination problems, e.g. concerning financial markets, global energy use and others. Addressing typical GSS research questions, the relevant data sets are mostly very large, and may include highly heterogeneous data sources, e.g. data streams from social media. The Center of Excellence aims at making High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Analysis usable in GSS to address complex societal and scientific problems. A key contribution of CoeGSS will be the development of an HPC-based framework to generate customized synthetic populations for GSS applications.
